The HIPAA or Health Insurance Portability and Acountability Act, which was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996, makes sure that all physicans, healthcare facilities,
medical billing services and clearing houses are HIPAA Compliant.
Millin Associates follows all HIPAA Compliant regulations and guidelines that were set forth.

If something is HIPAA Compliant, that means the privacy and security of a patients health care information is being protected, using national standards that were set for automatic electronic transmissions, including national identifiers for health insurance plans, providers and employers.
These standards also apply to Medicaid in New York, as well.

There should be a risk management plan in place, which specifies all of your policies and safeguards, to protect the integrity of patients health data such as; using passwords, firewalls, locking computer room doors and backing up to a hard drive and/or offsite servers. HIPAA will also protects a family's health insurance coverage if they lose or change their jobs.

Penalties can be stiff for not being HIPAA compliant and
violations can run anywhere between $100 to $250,000 and up.

There was an HIPAA compliant application for medicaid billing which was developed by
the N.Y. State Department of Health that is web based and FREE, called EPACES.

According to a survey by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society,
suprisingly, only approximately 64% of providers were HIPAA Compliant in 2004.
